MULTI-CULTURAL GREETINGS CARDS OPEN UP NEW MARKET
Southall-based Samantha Alfred has launched a new line of British
Asian greeting cards that reflect Britain's multi-cultural society.
Samantha, 34, who started the Jivana Style greetings card company
after being made redundant, believes she has spotted a gap in the
marketplace...and is successfully selling her new designs into Clinton
Cards and Fenwicks.
Says Samantha: "The Jivana range aims to address the gap in the
market. As a British-Indian, I felt that there was a need to design
cards that reflected Britain's multi cultural society. The cards are
inspired by India, henna patterns and Asian culture fused with British

LONDON MANUFACTURERS LOOK TO PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR
Manufacturers in London are riding a business growth curve that looks
set to continue through to 2008.
Research conducted by EEF South, the regional manufacturers’
organisation, points to strong performance among local companies,
including those in the capital, in the key areas of output and new
orders…with predictions of even better to come.
The EEF South business trends survey shows that 77 percent of
manufacturers are seeing steady or improving total output, with an even
higher proportion anticipating further growth over the next three
months. Seven in 10 report stable or improving new orders – and 91
percent expect the picture to remain positive through the rest of the

London MAS Launches Online Lean Tool
The London Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) has launched a free
online lean diagnostic tool as a key element of its revamped website.
Manufacturers logging on to www.mas-london.co.uk will be able to use
the self-diagnosis facility to determine their current lean
condition…and make plans for future improvements..........more

Shearline receives Royal seal of approval
His Royal Highness, The Duke of York, made a special visit to
Cambridgeshire recently to open a new £1 million facility at
award-winning manufacturing company, Shearline (www.shearline.co.uk), in
Ely.
As the UK's Special Representative for International Trade and
Investment, His Royal Highness was invited to Shearline to open an
extension to its existing 57,000 sq ft showcase facility. The newly
constructed two-storey building will become home to Hybrid Laser Tech
Ltd, a precision laser cutting company acquired by Shearline in 2005.....more

Hats off to Mary Jane’s Mobile Millinery…and London
MAS
Freelance journalist Mary Jane Baxter, from Deptford, South East
London always had a passion for hats – and now she’s set up the UK’s
first mobile millinery.
After studying hat-making , she worked for two years with "milliner
to the stars" Stephen Jones, and sold her own range to Harvey Nichols in
Knightsbridge, before setting up the UK’s first Mobile Millinery.
“I had the idea of a mobile millinery to bring the fun back into hats
but I needed some help to develop the idea into a business. That’s when
